Iain Gray

Iain Gray is the MSP for East Lothian. He was first elected as the Member of the Scottish Parliament for East Lothian in 2007 and re-elected in 2011 and 2016. He lives in the constituency with his wife Gil.

Iain spent his early years in Edinburgh - his family are originally from Leith - before moving to Inverness. He was dux at the Royal Academy before returning to study Physics at Edinburgh University.

He taught maths and Physics at Gracemount High School in Edinburgh before teaching in an agricultural technical school in Mozambique during the civil war there.

Iain then joined Oxfam as Scottish Campaigns Director. Over the next 12 years his work took him to the minefields of Cambodia and villages in Zimbabwe decimated by HIV/AIDs.

Iain Gray stood as a Labour MSP for the Scottish Parliament in 1999. He held four Ministerial posts, including Enterprise, Transport and Lifelong Learning. He subsequently spent four years as a Special Adviser to the then Secretary of State for Scotland, Alistair Darling.

Iain was elected as MSP for East Lothian in 2007. In September 2008, Labour Party members elected him as Scottish Labour Leader.

Iain was returned as the MSP for East Lothian in May 2011. He subsequently stepped down as Leader and was appointed as Convenor of the Scottish Parliament's Public Audit Committee, which is responsible for scrutinising public expenditure.

In July 2013 Iain returned to the Labour frontbench at Holyrood as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance. He is now the party's Education, Skills and Science Spokesperson.

He was re-elected on 5th May 2016 with a majority of 1,127.
