Johann Lamont MSP, Leader of the Scottish Labour Party, returned to the county this week to help the local campaign for a No vote in the independence referendum.

Ms Lamont first joined activists campaigning in Prestonpans and spoke to dozens of local people about the historic referendum and why she is urging a No vote. Many long-term Labour voters told her why they are voting No on 18 September and then Labour at next year’s UK general election to secure a fairer future for everyone in the UK.

The Scottish Labour leader then spoke to an audience of local people at Prestonpans Labour Club, where she highlighted Labour’s ongoing commitment to unity and solidarity and the pursuit of fairness across the UK, and urged local Labour supporters to cast a No vote on 18 September.

Speaking after her visit, Johann Lamont MSP said:

“Led by our fantastic Labour team of Iain Gray and Fiona O’Donnell, we are fighting a positive and energetic campaign here in Prestonpans and across East Lothian because we believe this is in the interests of our family, friends and neighbours.

“The best future for Scotland is one where have our own Scottish parliament with extra powers but backed by the strength and security of the UK.

“It’s clear from our campaigning that the majority of people across East Lothian believe that Scotland can have the best of both worlds and that is why they are proud to be voting No on September 18.”

Iain Gray MSP said:

“Johann was in inspirational form again in Prestonpans, highlighting the fact that we begin by determining what will best improve working people’s lives.

“This is in stark contrast to the SNP who view everything through the prism of independence, regardless of whether it will deliver social justice. As Johann said, the SNP would have to find £6bn of cuts to public services on day one of independence.  That would hit the most vulnerable of our fellow citizens hardest of all.

“With only days to go we will continue to engage with our supporters and urge them to vote No on 18 September.”

Fiona O’Donnell MP said:

“We are very fortunate here in East Lothian to have been joined by Johann for a second time during the campaign. She has been travelling the length and breadth of Scotland making a powerful case for a Labour No vote. She is stressing the unity, solidarity and strength that comes from being part of the UK, and which are also hallmarks of the Labour tradition.

“It’s a message that we know is going down well with our supporters in East Lothian, with the vast majority committed to voting No on 18 September. People don’t need to take all the risks of independence because more powers for the Scottish Parliament are guaranteed.”
