Local Labour activists have been campaigning in Tranent to mark the last 100 days of the independence referendum.

The members and supporters held a high profile street stall on Tranent High Street and spoke to people about Labour’s campaign for a No vote in the September poll. They received overwhelming backing from local people with many stopping to pledge their support for Labour and a No vote in the referendum.

Speaking afterwards, local Labour MP Fiona O’Donnell said:

“With only 100 days until the crucial vote, people are increasingly focused on what a vote for breaking away from our neighbours in the rest of the UK could mean for them and their families.

“After months of campaigning and spending millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money on their independence obsession, the SNP still can’t provide concrete answers on key issues such as currency, pensions, EU membership or the start-up costs of independence.

“This simply isn’t good enough and people in Tranent were telling us that the many uncertainties about the SNP’s case for independence is one of the reasons they will be voting No.

“We will continue to make Labour’s positive case for pooling and sharing resources across the UK to deliver a fairer future for everyone. The first step to achieving that goal must be a firm No vote in September.”

Fa’side councillor Shamin Akhtar, who was one of the campaigners in Tranent, said:

“This area has a long and proud Labour tradition. We are working hard here to get across our view that a big No vote in September, followed by the election of a Labour government next May, offers the best route to improving people’s lives here.

“The positive response we received on Saturday suggests that the majority of local people are already very receptive to that message, but we will keep making the case for a No vote right up to 18 September.”
