Senior figures from East Lothian Labour Party met in Prestonpans today to agree the party’s campaigning activity over the next four months to help secure a No vote locally in September’s independence referendum.

As well as speaking to thousands of local voters by phone and in person, party activists will also deliver a special referendum newspaper to homes across the county, hold regular street stalls, and invite local supporters to join the party at the £5 referendum rate.

Speaking after the meeting, Fiona O’Donnell MP said:

“We’ve been working incredibly hard over the last few months to engage with communities across East Lothian about why we believe there should be a No vote in September. It’s been clear that the majority of local people are already rejecting the SNP’s narrow appeal in favour of remaining part of something bigger and stronger.

“However, with just four months to go until the vote, we will be working even harder. We want a fairer future for everyone in the UK. We’ll continue to make that positive case right up to 18th September.”

Iain Gray MSP said:

“As we enter the final stages of the referendum campaign East Lothian Labour Party is in buoyant mood. We’ve seen firm support for our argument that Scotland’s best future lies as part of the United Kingdom in communities across the county.

“Most of the people I speak to believe we have the best of both worlds with a successful Scottish Parliament, backed up by a strong UK. We will step up that activity over the coming weeks and months to speak to as many local people as possible about why we want Scotland to remain in the UK.”

Labour Leader of East Lothian Council Willie Innes said:

“East Lothian Labour Party has a formidable track record on campaigning and winning elections. We are now getting into top gear for the most important challenge the party has ever faced and will be pulling out all the stops to convince people in East Lothian that they should vote No on 18th September.

“We’re urging Labour supporters who back our campaign to stay united to come forward and help us at this crucial time. A big No vote here will also give us a springboard to go into next year’s UK general election with great confidence.”
