Tranent and District Branch Labour Party is inviting local people to attend an event to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1984/85 miners’ strike.

The branch is hosting an event at the Loch Centre on Thursday 24th April, starting at 7pm. Fiona O’Donnell MP, Iain Gray MSP and David Costello will speak on the evening, along with others who participated in the dispute 30 years ago.

Tranent and District Branch Chair Robert McNeill said:

“Many local people were affected by the miners’ strike, either as striking miners themselves, or the family, friends or neighbours of those who participated in the dispute. It is absolutely right and proper that we acknowledge this important anniversary and remember the impact of the strike and the part played by local people here in Tranent. 

“It’s also a timely opportunity to remember that many of those involved in the strike are still seeking full transparency about what happened, which is what Labour’s ‘Justice for the Coalfields’ campaign is about.  The East Lothian Labour Party and Labour-led East Lothian District Council gave strong support to the striking miners all those years ago, and we continue to back the fight for justice now.

“I hope that people with a connection to the strike or an interest in it will join us on the 24th April  to commemorate the dispute and its damaging legacy, as well as the ongoing campaign for justice for those who were involved in it.”
 
Anyone who was involved in the strike in any way, wishes to mark the events of 30 years ago, or is simply interested in finding out more about the strike and its impact locally, is welcome to attend the event at the Loch centre.
