An event held in Prestonpans to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1984-85 miners’ strike has been hailed as a huge success by those involved in organising the night and accompanying exhibition.

The commemorative event was held at Prestonpans Labour Club on Friday 14th March. It was standing room only, with former miners from as far away as Durham and South Wales attending.

The evening comprised of a mix of speeches and entertainment, with contributions from local strike leader David Costello, former county MP and MSP John Home Robertson, Iain Gray MSP, Fiona O’Donnell MP, Nicky Wilson, President of the National Union of Mineworkers, and Helen Hunter, chairperson of the women’s support group.

The entertainment was provided by Bill Baillie’s Brass Band, Arthur Wilson and Hessel Torley, and Ana Filigonio.

A substantial amount of the money raised on the evening will be donated to the Whatton Lodge miners’ convalescent home in Gullane.

Speaking after the event, David Costello said:

“It was wonderful to see so many old friends together at Prestonpans Labour Club for this special event. Everyone on the organising committee is delighted with how successful the evening was and that we are now able to make a substantial donation to Whatton Lodge. The exhibition was also very well received and I want to encourage others to go and see it at the club.”

The exhibition will run at Prestonpans Labour Club until Friday 21st March.
