Activists from East Lothian Labour Party took the party’s message out on to the streets in towns across the county last Saturday (31 January) as part of Scottish Labour’s National Campaign Day and received a very positive response.

Local Labour MP Fiona O’Donnell, who is the party’s candidate again in May’s UK General Election, joined Iain Gray MSP, all of the county’s Labour councillors and dozens of local supporters at stalls in Prestonpans, Tranent, Musselburgh, Haddington, Dunbar and North Berwick.

They chatted to local residents and collected signatures supporting the party’s plan to fund an extra 1,000 nurses for Scotland from a UK-wide Mansion Tax on homes worth over £2 million.

Fiona O’Donnell MP said:

“The Labour Party in East Lothian has always been vibrant, active and in touch with local communities. People here know that our strong local Labour team puts the interests of East Lothian first.

“That was evident from the warm response we received on Saturday as we chatted to people on high streets across the county. There was widespread support for our policy to recruit an extra 1,000 nurses for Scotland from the proceeds of a UK-wide Mansion Tax, a policy the SNP will not back.

“I love campaigning and am enjoying speaking to hundreds of people every week. This election will be won door by door, conversation by conversation, and I plan to speak to thousands more local residents in the weeks and months leading up to 7 May.”

Pat O’Brien, Chair of East Lothian CLP, said:

“East Lothian Labour has an outstanding campaigning history. In Fiona O’Donnell we have a strong local candidate, with a track record of serving this county and its people, and an unrivalled enthusiasm for campaigning.

“We will be working hard to ensure we get our positive message to as many local people as possible before the election in May. Above all else, it’s essential we don’t let the Tories in the back door, which a vote for anyone but Labour risks.”
