Kezia Dugdale MSP, Scottish Labour’s Deputy Leader, joined local candidate Fiona O’Donnell on the county campaign trail on the weekend as they spoke to hundreds of people in Tranent about the forthcoming general election.

The duo led canvassing teams, including county MSP Iain Gray, local councillors and party activists, for an afternoon’s campaigning in the town to promote Labour’s better plan for Scotland.

They received plenty of warm support from local residents in Tranent, many of whom were clear that only Labour can defeat the Tories on 7 May.

Speaking after Ms Dugdale’s visit, Fiona O’Donnell said:

“It’s always a pleasure to be out campaigning with Kez. Her enthusiasm for knocking on doors and speaking to people about Labour’s positive case for Scotland gives everyone else a boost.

“As people focus their attention on the choice they face in this election, they are realising that we can either have a Labour or a Tory government on 7 May. I will continue to speak to as many local people as I possibly can over the next few weeks to set out our better plan for Scotland.

“I know that most people in East Lothian will not want to wake up on 8 May to find David Cameron and the Tories back in government for another five years. A vote for anyone but Labour risks letting this happen.”

Kezia Dugdale MSP said:

“Fiona is a hardworking and highly respected candidate. She’s been a strong voice for East Lothian for the past five years, helping thousands of local people. It was clear as we chatted to people in Tranent that they know this election is a choice between Labour and the Tories.

Scotland cannot afford another five years of a Tory austerity that does nothing to support working families in East Lothian and across Scotland. A Labour government will give our young people the opportunities they need, scrap exploitative zero hour contracts, and increase the minimum wage and extend the living wage.

“We need a Labour Government in May, only Labour is big enough to kick the Tories out, but that doesn’t happen by proxy, if you want a Labour Government you need to vote for Labour candidates like Fiona.”
