Members of East Lothian Labour Party met at Prestonpans Labour Club last week to determine who to support in the party’s UK leadership contest.

After a positive discussion, with considered contributions from supporters of both leadership contenders, the members present voted by a margin of 33 votes to 13 to nominate Owen Smith MP as the party’s next leader.

Cllr Jim Goodfellow, Chair of East Lothian CLP, said:

“The nomination meeting was conducted in a comradely and respectful way. Strong views were expressed about the merits of both leadership candidates, but there was also a very clear desire for unity. Above all, everyone was agreed on the importance of coming together after the leadership election to concentrate our efforts on opposing the Tory government.”
