Led by Martin Whitfield MP and Iain Gray MSP, local Labour activists have joined colleagues around the country in supporting the Labour for a Public Vote National Campaign Day.

Mr Whitfield and Mr Gray were in North Berwick speaking to local people about why they believe there should be a final say public vote to break the Brexit deadlock and why they will back Remain in that vote.

Earlier this year, East Lothian Labour members passed a motion urging the party to campaign energetically for a confirmatory public vote and to Remain in the EU, which it sent to the party’s UK conference in Brighton.

Labour for a Public Vote is a campaigning body made up of Labour Party members and supporters working to stop a no deal Brexit, campaign for the UK to remain in the EU and put that to a vote of the public in a referendum.

Martin Whitfield MP said:

“East Lothian voted overwhelmingly to Remain in 2016, as it voted No to i”ndependence in 2014. The vast majority of contact I have with constituents suggests these positions still represent the clear view of most local people.

“The more people learn about the consequences of Brexit, the less likely they are to support it. Like the majority here, I believe we are better and stronger remaining in both the UK and the EU and that is what I will keep fighting for.”

Iain Gray MSP said:

“East Lothian Labour and Scottish Labour are clear that we need to put the Brexit question back to the people in a confirmatory vote. A credible deal for leaving versus Remain offers the opportunity to agree a way forward and unite the country.

“If we secure that referendum, we will campaign to Remain in the EU in line with the view of most people here in East Lothian. Remaining in the UK and the EU is the best option for local jobs, the economy and our future.”
