East Lothian Labour supporters were out in force to back the pro-UK Better Together campaign across the county last weekend. Stalls were held in North Berwick, Haddington, Dunbar and Tranent, with dozens of supporters involved in campaign activity.

In Tranent, more than a dozen local Labour activists joined other Better Together campaigners to speak to people about the positive case for Scotland remaining within the United Kingdom. They chatted with local people about the questions they have regarding next year’s referendum and signed up dozens of new supporters for the Better Together campaign.

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive with the vast majority supporting the Better Together campaign’s central message that Scotland is stronger as part of the UK.

Iain Gray MSP, who was in Haddington on Saturday, said:

“Most of the available evidence suggests that the majority of Scots are not buying what Alex Salmond and the SNP are trying to sell them. While they obsess over separating Scotland from our neighbours, most people believe they should be focussed on what really matters -; jobs, health and education.

“That is what people were telling us in East Lothian on the weekend. With a year to go we will never be complacent, and will continue to give people every opportunity to talk to us about the positive case for Scotland remaining an integral part of the UK.”

Robert McNeill, Chair of the Tranent Labour Branch and the party’s local Better Together co-ordinator, said:

“It seems clear that most local people who have already made up their minds believe that we are better off staying in the UK. That was certainly the message we received from the vast majority of the people we spoke to on Saturday.

“However, there are many who have yet to make up their minds, which is why we will continue to be visible and available to talk to people about why we believe we are better together within the UK.”

East Lothian Labour supporters will gather in Prestonpans next Saturday (28 September) for a United with Labour stall highlighting why the Scottish Labour Party believes that Scotland is stronger as part of the UK. We are urging local people to stop and to chat to us and tell us what they think about the referendum and Scotland’s future.
