East Lothian Labour’s recent comedy night at Prestonpans Labour Party Club has been hailed a resounding success.

The ‘Stand up for Labour’ event, featuring Scottish comics Arnold Brown and Stephen Carlin, and newcomer Manos Kanellos, saw the club packed out as local Labour supporters clamoured to see top quality comic entertainment here in the county.

Around 100 local people attended the night, which was sponsored by the Community Union. While the primary purpose of the evening was social, it also raised several hundred pounds to support the party’s local campaigning activity.

In addition to the three acts, local Labour representatives Iain Gray MSP and Fiona O’Donnell MP said a few words about the importance of the next 12 months and the referendum on Scotland’s constitutional future.

Iain Gray MSP said:

“This comedy night was something a bit different for the party and our supporters in East Lothian. The Labour club is a perfect venue and it was good to see so many old friends, as well as a lot of new faces, at the event. The comics were top draw and everyone had a great evening.

“However, while the laughs were the main purpose of the evening, it also provided a welcome opportunity to say a few serious words about why Labour supports Scotland’s place in the UK and how hard we will be campaigning for a no vote in next year’s referendum.

Pat O’Brien, Vice Chair of East Lothian Labour Party, added:

“Involvement in the Labour Party has always had a strong social aspect to it, so it was fantastic to get together with so many friends and have a really good laugh. I want to thank the comics and Stand up for Labour for making the night such a success, and Community for sponsoring it.

“As well as giving people a fun evening, it has also helped raise important funds which we will use to take our positive message out to communities across the county. I urge anyone who would like to get involved in our work to contact us and find out more about the Labour Party in East Lothian.”
